Dr. John Cochrane was Physician and Surgeon General of the Middle Department under Washington during the Revolutionary War. At the Whitemarsh encampment in 1777, Cochran used Hope Lodge as his head quarters, and he found himself involved in giving smallpox inoculations at Valley Forge. He became Chief Physician and Surgeon of the Army on October 6, 1780. On January 17, 1781, he became the head of the entire Medical Department, working on improving condition there, and he served there until the end of the war.

After the close of the war, he moved to New York City and was appointed commissioner of loans in 1790 by President Washington.

Alexander Hamilton served as the first Secretary of Treasury under President George Washington.
