A Program for the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy, Showing JFK and His Running Mate Lyndon Johnson on the Cover, Signed by Harry Truman

A wonderful association piece containing images and a signature of the three Democratic presidents from 1960-1969

Harry Truman was a student of American history and of the presidency. He often used historical examples to analyze contemporary politics and measure presidential successes and failures. In a letter to his former Secretary of State, Dean Acheson, Truman relied on his understanding of history to gauge political events unfolding around him. In the process, he revealed his appreciation for past presidents who took decisive action – Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, and Grover Cleveland.

When John F. Kennedy was nominated by the Democratic Party as its standard bearer, Truman’s support of Kennedy had not come naturally. The “boy” was too young, too inexperienced, even too Catholic – but most of all, he was Joe Kennedy’s son, and Truman loathed the isolationist, pro-McCarthy ex-Ambassador to Great Britain. “It’s not the Pope I’m afraid of,” he once famously cracked, “it’s the pop.”

But Jack Kennedy kept calling and courting him, and ultimately Truman, at the age of 76, was won over and campaigned for him in nine states. He attended the Kennedy inauguration as well. The day after Kennedy’s inauguration in January 1961, Truman was welcomed back into the Oval Office for the first time in eight years.

This is a program for the Kennedy inauguration showing banners and JFK and his running mate Lyndon Johnson on the cover. It sites the post-inaugural as being at the Mayflower Hotel. Truman has signed the program “Kindest regards, from Harry Truman.”

A fine association piece.
