As vice president during President Franklin Roosevelt’s fourth term, he became president when Roosevelt died in office in 1945. He was elected president in his own right during the 1948 election, serving until January 20, 1953.

In 1947, artist Martha Greta Kempton painted President Truman’s portrait. This is an imposing 9 by 12 inch color reproduction of that portrait, inscribed and signed, “To Gil Moody, from Harry Truman.” At lower right is a quotation from Truman, “We seek a peaceful world,” with a printed signature.
