sold Ulysses S. Grant Changes His Mind and Revokes an Appointment

1st cancelled presidential appointment we have seen.

A Document Signed as President, folio, Washington, December 10, 1874, appointing Edward B. Heald “Deputy Postmaster at Harrodsburg in the State of Kentucky.” Of particular interest is that the appointment is marked “Executive Mansion, January 28th 1874. Cancelled by direction of the President.”

It is not known what reason Grant had to change his mind (quite likely political disloyalty), but this is the first presidential appointment we have seen that has been marked cancelled across its face.
