A primary founder of the Democratic Party, he served as New York’s attorney general, U.S. senator, then briefly as the ninth governor of New York before joining Andrew Jackson’s administration as the tenth United States secretary of state, minister to Great Britain, and ultimately the eighth vice president when named Jackson’s running mate for the 1832 election. Van Buren won the presidency in 1836, lost re-election in 1840, and failed to win the Democratic nomination in 1844. Later in his life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election.
A partly printed check drawn on The Bank of Kinderhook, New York, May 30, 1861 made out to “L. Holmes in full of ac/or order” for $32.56, and signed by Van Buren “M. Van Buren.” A few ragged edges not affecting any writing.

A partly printed check drawn on the National Bank of Fremont, Ohio, December 31, 1883 made out in his hand to “R.B.H.” for $25 and signed “R.B. Hayes.”
Bank Check Signed by Former President William H. Taft While a Law Professor at Yale
A printed check on his personal Riggs National Bank of Washington account, filled out and signed by Taft to Mary A. Zraick for $14, April 8, 1919. This was two years before his being named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Benjamin Harrison Signed Bank Check to himself While a Lawyer
A partly printed check made out to himself on the Indianapolis Branch Banking Company, March 26, 1873, written in his hand to “Self – N.Y. Exch” for $20, boldly signed, with an additional check signed by Harrison. This was soon after losing his campaign for Governor of Indiana.

A partly printed check on the Plains, Georgia Mercantile Company bank filled out and signed by Carter as “J.E. Carter, Jr.”, paying C.W. Stapleton $120.32 on December 23, 1959. There is a light stamp “Carter’s Warehouse, Plains Georgia” over his signature with a bank stamp above. This check would have had something to do with Carter’s peanut business.
