Capitalizing on his new fame as a hero of the Spanish-American War, in 1899 Putnam’s published his book, “Big Game Hunting in the Rockies and on the Great Plains”. It comprised two of his earlier books, “Hunting Trips of a Ranchman” and “The Wilderness Hunter”. There were 55 illustrations, by Frederic Remington and others. The frontispiece of the 1899 book is a fine portrait of him standing proudly in his Rough Rider uniform. A signed limited edition of 1000 was produced, with TR’s signature below his picture and thus constituting a signed photograph in itself.

James Carlton Young was a businessman and rare book collector. This copy, one of the limited edition, contains two TR signatures: one under the photo and one as an inscription, which reads: “To James Carlton Young, with best wishes from Theodore Roosevelt.”
