President Andrew Jackson Awards a Patent for Improvements in Agricultural Machinery

Document signed, as President, on vellum, February 10, 1836, a patent awarded to Chauncey D. Skinner and Dana Read for “improvement in the machine for cutting Straw and other Substances,” countersigned by John Forsyth as Secretary of State and Benjamin F. Butler as Attorney General, bound with the manuscript petition for the patent and having seals and ribbon intact.

Skinner went on to invent an automatic rifle, for which he is principally known.
