President Abraham Lincoln Presides Over the Passage of a Federal Position From Father to Son

This document, which shows Lincoln lending a hand to a prearranged family transfer, completed the transition.

In 1862, Lincoln appointed a prominent New Yorker, Hascall Ransford, Sr., to an Internal Revenue position: “Assessor of the Internal Revenue in the Nineteenth Collection District of the State of New York.” Pursuant to what was obviously a previous arrangement, Ransford Sr. stepped down from that post on March 16, 1863; his resignation letter addressed to the President is in the Library of Congress. On March 27, just eleven days later, Lincoln nominated his son, Hascall Ransford, Jr., for the position his father had held. Congress later approved the nomination, and the younger Ransford filled that post. Document Signed as President, Washington, February 23, 1864, being the official appointment of the younger Ransford. The document is countersigned by Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase.
