Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861. With his mind on the state of the nation on the brink of war, in the early weeks of his administration he nonetheless found time to make appointments. This appointment dates from the earliest weeks, and as such is uncommon.

Document signed, Washington, March 27, 1861, naming Richard L. Carey “Deputy Postmaster at Dunkirk, New York,” for a term of four years. As attractive a Lincoln document as you can find. Countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward.
