Governor Thomas Jefferson Grants Land to a Virginia Soldier of the Revolutionary War

An early soldier’s land grant, the typical one being from years later

Needing to bolster enlistments, in 1779 Virginia passed an act, hereunder the state offered bounty lands for Revolutionary War military service. To qualify, a Virginia soldier or sailor had to serve at least three years continuously in the Continental or state forces. James Cooley enlisted in the army in 1776 and was discharged at war’s end. His regiment, the 6th Virginia, was with Washington at Valley Forge, and was involved in a number of other engagements. By this document, Virginia grants Cooley such land.

Document signed as Governor of Virginia, Williamsburg, October 20, 1779, granting James Cooley, for 15 shillings paid to the Commonwealth Treasury, a grant of land of 150 acres. Jefferson was only governor for a few years, so his land grants signed as governor are quite uncommon. Some separation at folds, not affecting signature. Affixed to a light support.
