Walt Disney Signed Original Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad Passenger Ticket

A memento of Disneyland as it was in its very early years when Walt Disney, himself, was still developing the park, and the ride he first rode at its opening; We have never seen another

The story of the Disneyland Railroad begins with its chief engineer, Walt Disney, whose love for the steam locomotives of his youth led his Imagineers to create the same experience for millions of park guests, with continuous service for over six decades. The attraction originated as a concept created by Walt Disney, who drew inspiration from the ridable miniature Carolwood Pacific Railroad built in his backyard. The Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad was the original name for what is now known as the Disneyland Railroad.

On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened; and the day began with Walt Disney driving the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad No. 2 locomotive and its passenger train into the Main Street, U.S.A. Station. In the presence of future President Ronald Reagan, and broadcast by television crews nationwide, Disney dedicated the theme park as Disneyland, which was utterly unlike any previous amusement park in its breath-taking scope and variety. He defined his objectives, saying, “To all who come to this happy place… Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America … with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”

When Disneyland first opened in 1955, there were two train stations, the Main St. Depot and Frontierland Depot. By 1956 Fantasyland Depot, a new station, was added to the route. Sante Fe & Disneyland Railroad passengers used elaborate multi-part tickets for passage.

A Walt Disney signed Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad Ticket, stamped and dated July 27, 1957 on the verso. The original 1957 Adult ticket reads “Issued by Santa Fe & Disneyland R.R. Good for One First Class Passage Between Disney Points.” The ticket provides for stopovers at the Main St. Depot, Frontierland Depot, or Fantastyland Depot.

This tickets predates Tomorrowland Depot, which opened in 1958 and provides a momentary snapshot of Disneyland as it was in the early years when Walt Disney, himself, was still developing the park.

Anything connecting Disney with his parks is rare, and even more special is a piece that directly links Disney with the locomotive, his passion.
