Autograph Letter Signed as President, Washington, May 24, 1858 to British physician and travel writer Sir Henry Holland. “I desire to introduce to you & to commend to your favorable regard my esteemed & valued friends, Mrs. William M. Gwin, the lady of Senator Gwin of California. She is about to visit Europe with her son & daughter & any attentions with which you may honor them will be gratefully acknowledged by your friend.” Buchanan had become well acquainted with Holland when he was the American Ambassador to the Court of St. James a few years before. They remained friends though Buchanan was sorely disappointed that Holland did not visit him at his home at Wheatland during an 1865 visit to the United States.
