Gilder was co-editor of The Critic which he and his sister founded in 1881 and in which some of Lowell’s writings appeared, and in the year of this letter The Critic dedicated a special issue to Lowell containing recollections and reminiscences by his friends, including former presidents Hayes and Benjamin Harrison and British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone as well as Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Perhaps Lowell had written something for the issue which he realized needed to be corrected.
