August 1945: The war was raging on the Pacific Front with hard-fought victory after victory but no end in sight. Seeing this, President Truman made the difficult decision to drop the first Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima on August 6. Two days later the U.S.S.R. declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria. With the pressure mounting in the U.S. for the President to bring the war to an end, on August 9 the second Atomic Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Then Emperor Hirohito and Japanese Prime Minister Suzuki decided to seek an immediate peace with the Allied powers. On August 14, the Japanese accepted unconditional surrender and two weeks later U.S. soldiers landed near Tokyo to begin the occupation of Japan. August 1945 – the culmination of the war – put an end to the years of fighting and secured peace throughout the world.
