Wellington carried the sword of state on the occasion of the peace celebration in St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1814. That celebration was premature, as Napoleon returned from Elba. Wellington jumped at a chance to repeat the honor in 1822.

Autograph Letter Signed, Brighton, January 27, 1822, responding to an invitation from the House of Lords. “I have reviewed your note, and I lose no time to inform you that I will with great pleasure attend at the House of Lords on the 5th of February to bear the sword of State.”
