America’s most famous trial lawyer, Darrow lived his life fighting for civil liberties, equality and social injustice. He was willing to take unpopular positions and defend unpopular men and causes to further these goals. Thus, he fought against capital punishment and for labor organizors, against attacks on evolution and for civil rights.
His unforgettable courtroom dramas pitted him against the entrenched forces of the establishment, and somehow, against all odds, he usually prevailed. He is most famous for representing the defense in the 1925 Scopes case, which was immortalized in Inherit the Wind.
As for politics, discussing socialism in his autobiography, Darrow said, “Still, while I was in sympathy with its purposes, I could never find myself agreeing with its methods…And I never could convince myself that any theory of Socialism so far elaborated was consistent with individual liberty.”
Clearly individual freedom was the controlling factor in his political motivations. The primacy of individual freedom in Darrow’s worldview is confirmed by the sentiment he chose to express at the bottom of this original pen and ink drawing of him by P.J. Hoff, a feature writer and artist for the St. Paul (Minn.) Dispatch.
