He hopes for the “continuance of the friendly relations which have heretofore existed between the United States and Peru".

Coolidge had an interest in South America, and in 1923 interceded in a dispute between Chile and Peru over the border provinces of Tacna and Arica. He urged the two countries to settle the question by a vote, which suggestion was carried out (although the ownership dispute was not finally settled until the administration of his successor, Herbert Hoover). Here he embraces the opportunity to extend greetings to Augusto B. Legu y Salcedo on his reelection as Peruvian president.
