19th century manuscript, unpublished, documenting the workings of the Cornwell family, one of Long Island’s original settlers, and their farm, likely near Cow Neck, documenting hundreds of transactions from other prominent families, such as livestock, crops, and machinery.

The extensive, approximately 25-page, dense manuscript begins in 1811 and continues through 1816, covering the entirety of the War of 1812. The customers of the farm are a who’s who of the era in that section of New York, including:

Solomon Underhill
Thomas Dodge
Noah Mason
Whiteheads
Mitchells
Townsends
Baxter
Hopkins
Payments to “black men”

This ledger was later used as an album to which the owner affixed prints and newspaper articles. Conservation revealed this account. which was hidden underneath.
