Sold – Ulysses S. Grant Inscribes a Photograph to the Daughter of a Union General

Charles Collis was the commander of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry. He fought in several major battles and was wounded at Chancellorsville. In 1864 he was breveted as brigadier general, and later major general. He received the Medal of Honor for his service at Fredericksburg.

In May 1877, after leaving office, Grant and his wife and son Jesse traveled on a world tour. They returned to the United States on September 20, 1879, arriving at San Francisco. They remained there but a short while before continuing their tour by heading to Yosemite, but long enough for noted San Francisco photographer Thomas Houseworth to capture a portrait of the former President.

A cabinet photograph of Grant taken by Houseworth, inscribed and signed on the verso to General Collis’ daughter Amelia, “With the compliments of U.S. Grant.” This is the only signed photograph of Grant in California that we can recall seeing.
