Document Signed as President, 11 by 18 inches, Washington, July 15, 1870, stating that “Reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Ability and Punctuality” of Mrs. Sillyman, Grant reappoints her to the post. The document is countersigned by Hamilton Fish as Secretary of State. It is very unusual indeed to find a document appointing a woman to a federal office this early, this being the first of Grant we have had. There is a small yellow stain; the document is otherwise in very good condition.
