Sold – Candidate Ronald Reagan Finds the Campaign Trail “Very Demanding”

Written during his California gubernatorial campaign.

On January 1, 1966, Reagan announced his candidacy for governor of California, promising to reduce waste in government and "clean up the mess at Berkeley." From that date until the election on November 8, his life essentially consisted of one campaign appearance or event after another.

Typed Letter Signed, Pacific Palisades, May 4, 1966, to Todd M. George, four-time mayor of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and author of the book, The Conversion of Cole Younger. George sent copies of the book to a number of political figures. “This is a hasty line because, as you pointed out, the campaign trail is very demanding. I want you to know how much I appreciated your kind letter, and even more, the copy of your book. I look forward to reading it. It was very kind of you to take the time and trouble to do this, and I am most grateful.”

Although the campaign had its demands, it proved well worth the effort. Appealing to traditional Republican voters as well as to working-class Democrats, Reagan defeated Pat Brown, the incumbent Democrat, by almost a million votes.
