A CDV of Lee in uniform, taken close to the end of the war, signed “R.E. Lee.” On the verso appears the imprinted backstamp of noted Confederate-era photographers Vannerson & Jones, Richmond, Va. Above this photographer’s stamp is a United States tax stamp, meaning that although the photograph may have been taken earlier, the CDV was purchased from the Vannerson firm after the war ended and U.S. authority had been reestablished. It was in all likelihood signed in 1865, as by 1866 photographs of Lee showed him in civilian clothes and the U.S. government no longer required tax stamps.
