Barnum more than any other person created the concept of popular entertainment and developed to a virtual science methods of satisfying the public. As inventor of the the idea of promoting entertainment artists, he was the world’s first impresario. But his interests included the theater, and he produced melodramas, farces, and historical plays, put on by highly regarded actors. He revered Shakespeare and “watered down” Shakespearean plays to make them family entertainment. He even tried to buy Shakespeare’s birth home.

Autograph Quotation Signed, Bridgeport, Conn., August 15, 1874, containing his favorite line from Shakespeare: “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.”
