President James Buchanan Recognizes the Appointment of a Consul by a State Now Part of Germany

Reuss was a principality located in present day Thuringia, Germany. In 1859, it sent an representative to act as consul to the United States, and President Buchanan recognized the envoy’s status.

Document signed as President, Washington, August 17, 1859, reciting that Henry Schondorff has been appointed “Consul of the Prince of Reuss (Elder Branch) for the United States, to reside at New York.” The document then recognizes him in that capacity.
