Typed Letter Signed on her stamped Missionaries of Charity letterhead, Calcutta, July 26, 1996, to a woman whose mother was ill, sending her a healing medal and words of inspiration. “This brings you my prayer and God’s blessing. I am sorry to learn of your mother’s illness and I shall surely pray for her. I am enclosing a Miraculous medal which your mother should wear and pray daily, “Mary Mother of Jesus heal me”. Suffering is a gift from God. He gives to those whom He loves much. Yes we should pray for healing but at the same time resign ourselves to God’s Holy Will. Keep the joy of loving God in your heart as your strength and share this joy with all you meet.” The medal, which is included, shows a figure of Mary surrounded by the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
On the verso is the Catholic emblem of a cross atop a large letter M. We have had some wonderful letters of Mother Teresa, but never before one which contained a holy medal and referenced her sending it. The content of the letter is inspirational and comforting to those who suffer, telling them of God’s love and calling suffering a gift. By using the word “miraculous” to describe the medal, she also emphasises her belief in miracles and the effectiveness of prayer in bringing them about. A personal religious memento from a future saint, with her advice on how to use it.
