Sold – Louis Armstrong Praises a Musician He Met on One of His International Tours

The music of Louis Armstrong was much appreciated around the world, even more so than in the United States. In 1948 he made his first trip to Europe and in the early 1950’s toured triumphantly through much of the continent. He was very popular in Germany and included stops there in quite a number of concert tours. 1963 was a great year for Armstrong. He made a film “Paris Blues” on location in France, appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival and performed for President John F. Kennedy. The following year his “Hello Dolly” would become an international smash hit.

Autograph Letter Signed on letterhead of a hotel in Kiel, Germany, 6 pages, October 17, 1963, to German trombonist Franz Schuritz, who made his specially-made lip salve available to Armstrong, praising him and saying how wonderful it was to meet him in Germany. “‘Surprise, surprise.’ Here I am again, back on these fine German Territories, and about to see my dear friends Mr. Franz Schuritz, and his wonderful family. I sing your praises to everyone there…My wife and Trummy Young (my trombone mane)…they sent a special hello…I’m sure that Trummy Young and I will want to buy some Lip Salve from you the day we arrive to take on the road with us. As for myself, I would like to buy a hundred dollars worth for my personal use…Your salve is part of me, and that’s the way it’s going to be until I die. I have all the confidence in the world in your Lip Salve. So has every musician, all over the world whom I have given a box to when they have difficulties with their chops. (I mean their lips). Ha. Ha. If there’s anything that you wish of me such as publicities, etc. just say the word…“
