General of the Armies and Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces of World War I. A 7 by 9 inch signed photograph of him in uniform, inscribed “To Mrs. Susan Sturgis Barry, recalling a delightful evening with the Atterburys…”

During World War I, William W.  Atterbury was commissioned as a brigadier general and reorganized the European railroad network to allow rapid movement of Allied forces. After the war, he became president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Most likely he is the Atterbury to whom Pershing refers.
