William K. Van Pelt was a Republican congressman who represented Wisconsin’s 6th district for more than a decade and also served as delegate to his party’s national convention on two occasions. In March 1962, he received a hand-delivered letter from the President, a Democrat named Kennedy.

Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead, Washington, March 10, 1962, to Van Pelt, wishing him a happy birthday. “It gives me a great deal of pleasure to congratulate you again this year on your birthday. I hope that this note finds you in good health and spirits, and that you will have many happy returns of the day.” The envelope is still present. This letter is a memento of a time when members of both parties conducted themselves with civility and even expressed friendship for each other.
