"I hereby appoint you a Governor of that Corporation to serve on its Board of Governors for a term of three years".

The American Red Cross, as one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations, is dedicated to helping people in need throughout the United States. A 50-member, all volunteer Board of Governors leads the organization.

The President of the United States, who is honorary chairman of the Red Cross, appoints eight governors, including the chairman of the board. The chairman nominates and the board elects the president of the Red Cross who is responsible for carrying into effect the policies and programs of the board. Arthur Goldberg was President Kennedy’s Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, and was thus a logical choice to serve on the Red Cross Board of Governors.

John F. Kennedy autograph on a Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead, Washington, March 14, 1961, to Goldberg, appointing him to that position. “Pursuant to the provisions of Section 5, as amended, of the Act to incorporate the American Red Cross, I hereby appoint you a Governor of that Corporation to serve on its Board of Governors for a term of three years, succeeding James P. Mitchell.”

JFK had a great deal of trust in Goldberg. After just twenty months in his cabinet, Kennedy nominated him to fill a vacant seat on the United States Supreme Court.
