Rev. Henry M. Field was the younger brother of Cyrus Field, who laid the first telegraphic cable across the Atlantic Ocean. The younger Field was himself prominent as an author, being one of the first Americans to gain renown as a writer of books on travel. He also wrote about his brother’s exploits. Here, before publication of his first book, we find Field travelling and obtaining a letter of introduction from the President himself.
Autograph Letter Signed as President, Washington, April 8, 1847, to American diplomats abroad, providing a letter of introduction to Field. “Having been informed that the Rev. Henry Field of St. Louis, Missouri is about to leave the United States to make a tour through Europe, it gives me great pleasure to state that he has been introduced to me by my friend the Rev. M. McLain of this city as a most worthy gentleman. I commend him as such to the favorable consideration and attention to the diplomatic & consular agents of the United States and all other American citizens with whom he may meet during his absence from his country.” The President must have had great confidence in Field to give him such a door-opening letter.
