Sold – Rare James A. Garfield Document Signed as President, Appointing Chauncey Harris, former colonel of the 14th New Jersey Infantry, as a Postmaster

Document Signed as President, Washington, March 22, 1881. Garfield appoints Chauncey Harris, former colonel of the 14th New Jersey Infantry, Postmaster of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The document is countersigned by Postmaster General Thomas James.

Garfield was president for just four months when he was shot on July 2, 1881, at the Sixth Street Station of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad in Washington by Charles J. Guiteau, a disgruntled federal office-seeker. He died on September 19, 1881. But because of his medical condition he had little opportunity to sign presidential paperwork after July 2, 1881. So after William Henry Harrison, Garfield’s signed letters and documents as president are rarer than any other president’s. This beautiful example, complete with seal and red ribbon, is just the second we have ever carried.
