Sold – President Herbert Hoover Is “Exceedingly Glad” to Have a Picture of Lincoln

"I want you to know how much I appreciate this very thoughtful courtesy...".

Hoover was always a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln. So when Robert McDougal, former president of the Chicago Board of Trade and a friend of Chief Justice Taft, sent him a picture of the great Civil War president, he was quick to respond with gratitude.

Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead, Washington, May 29, 1929, to McDougal. “The picture of Abraham Lincoln which you were kind enough to send to me has been received. I want you to know how much I appreciate this very thoughtful courtesy on your part. I am exceedingly glad to have it. “

Just three years later, in the midst of the Depression and in a tough reelection fight, Hoover identified himself with Lincoln’s reelection effort in 1864 and predicted (inaccurately) that he would overcome his difficulties, as had Lincoln.
