Sold – George III and Prime Minister Pitt Appoint an Officer

He served in America in the French and Indian War.

The Royal Volunteers Light Infantry was raised in 1759, in the midst of the French and Indian War, as the first light infantry regiment ever formed in the British Army, and was placed under the command of Colonel John Crawford. Belle Isle in the Detroit River was the site of a French fort and fur-trading settlement and was captured by the British in 1760.

Three years later the Royal Volunteers were part of a British force that withstood a long siege there during Pontiac’s Rebellion. After a distinguished, although brief career, the unit was disbanded at the peace of 1763.
