On November 3, 1979, Bush bested Sen. Howard Baker in a "beauty contest" straw poll taken at the Maine Republican convention in Portland. Then he went on to campaign for the New Hampshire primary scheduled to take place on February 26, 1980. He lost badly and his star seemed in eclipse. However, Ronald Reagan selected him as his running mate, and soon he would be vice president.
