I am sorry but it is impossible for me to join the Utica chapter of the Isaak Walton League of America. I have had to stop joining any organizations, as there are many requests made of me. My best wishes for its success.”To emphasis the point that this was a blanket policy and not just a put-off, FDR inserted the word “any” in the text and ended the last sentence in a hand-written exclamation point. It seems that for Roosevelt the public man, invitations, however well-meaning, had become burdensome.
