On January 14, 1892, a heavy blow fell upon Edward, Prince of Wales, son and heir of Queen Victoria, and his house, with the death of his eldest son, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence. The young prince, who after a short career at Oxford and Cambridge was just settling down to play his part in public life, had recently become engaged to Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, and the popularity of the heir to the crown had been increased by his intended bride being an English princess. His Royal household was devastated by the loss and in March decided that a change of scenery might help. They went to France.

Wellington College was opened in 1859. It quickly became one of the great national boarding schools of England and had numerous royal connections. The Prince of Wales was a patron of the College and interested in its progress.

Autograph Letter Signed on mourning stationery, Cannes, April 23, 1892, to Wellington College head Alfred C. Talbot whom he addresses as “My dear Talbot.” “Many thanks for your letter & report in re Wellington College which I am glad to find is satisfactory. It is a great thing that the school will be able to assemble again on May 10th & that all the surrounding houses excepting one on land of the Masters will be occupied. It is very satisfactory that 370 boys will assemble when the school opens & that applications for admission are as numerous as ever…The names you propose for new governors are very good ones & I wish you would mention them to the Dukes of Connaught & Cambridge, Prince Christian & Archbishop of Canterbury – in confidence…We have been over 6 weeks on the Riviera which has done us some good & we are looking all the better for this charming climate. We go to Hyeres today to see the Queen & next week to Paris for a few days on our way home. I shall be very happy to see you on my retun so as to have a good talk over Wellington College matters.”

Wellington College still exists and counts George Orwell as one of its noted graduates. As for Princess Victoria Mary, she married her late fiancee’s younger brother George instead, and they reigned as King George V and Queen Mary for 26 years.
