Justice of the Supreme Court from 1910-16, he was the presidential nominee of the Republican party in 1916. After a stint as Secretary of State under Harding and Coolidge, he returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice.

A 6 1/2 by 9 inch photograph put to an 7 by 10 inch mount by Harris and Ewing, signed by Hughes on the mount to the son of his party’s greatest gadfly, who had defected to support Woodrow Wilson less than two years before, “To Philip La Follette, with cordial regards, Charles E. Hughes”. On the verso, Gov. La Follette has written “His Honor Charles E. Hughes of New York. Presented to Philip La Follette, January 8, 1914, Washington, D.C.”
