The Raab Collection has donated a large collection of books from the library of the family of Director of the Mint Robert Patterson to the University of Virginia, where the family has deep ties. The books are textbooks for college and college prep use. Patterson likely acquired some while in Europe before going to UVA. Most of the books were used by Patterson’s son Robert, either prior to entering UVA or while at UVA, and later at Penn after his father took a position there. A number of the volumes were bound in Charlottesville at that time; two have an interesting note to the effect that Robert, Jr. bound them himself. The Raab Collection has a long history of donation where the material is tangential to or outside its core business.
