Were I 20 years younger, I might perhaps listen to your project which really seems to promise certain success, but I cannot possibly do it now. I hope you may find a younger party who will aid or join you & that you may be eminently successful.”
It is hard to believe that Barnum, ever the businessman, turned down a business proposition he saw as certain of success for any reason. The letter is age toned but is otherwise very good.
