Concentrated on the beauty of nature near his homes in Pennsylvania and Maine, Wyeth’s work often portrays a sense of privacy or even isolation. Nonetheless, he is one of the most celebrated living artists.
The National Gallery of Art and Museum of Modern Art each featured him in their first major shows of a living artist, and his exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art broke the museum’s attendance record. The following letter further demonstrates just how popular his work has been with people in all walks of life for well over three decades.
The city of Pottstown, Pa. is not far from Wyeth’s Chester County home, and when its centennial approached, it wanted to have something special to exhibit in celebration. It seemed only appropriate, therefore, that it should approach Wyeth about featuring one of his works. The editor of the city’s newspaper was delegated to contact Wyeth to ask if he would be willing to loan a painting for the event, and Wyeth responded warmly.

I will be very pleased to loan a painting to your Pottstown Bicentennial in March of next year. Let me know several weeks ahead so we can arrange insurance & when you will pick up painting.”
The postmarked envelope is included. An interesting letter illustrating that Wyeth’s work was perceived as an exciting attraction, and showing his personal generosity. Wyeth does not sign autographs and very few of his letters have come on the market; this is our first.
