Sold – One of Andrew Jackson’s Earliest Signed Land Grants

Signed little more than a month after his inauguration.

Land grant documents were executed by presidents in blank and then distributed to the local U.S. land offices to be filled in and dated as the land in their districts was purchased and paid for.

Document Signed as president on vellum deeded 80 acres of land to Daniel Houser of Ohio. It was issued at Crawfordsville, Indiana on April 10, 1829, little more than a month after Jackson was inaugurated on March 4. Considering how slowly transportation moved from Washington to the Indiana frontier in the age before railroads, Jackson would surely have had to sign this in early March for it to arrive by the fill-in date of April 10. Thus, this is clearly from one of his earliest batches of grants, if not the earliest.

President Jackson was the last chief executive to sign land grants, continuing to do so until 1833. By that time, the practice had become so onerous that he entrusted the chore to clerks.
