Sold – Huge, Sepia Signed Photograph of Albert Einstein on His First Trip to the U.S.

From Palm Springs, California.

In January 1932, on Einstein’s first trip to America, he was the guest of his friend Samuel Untermyer at his estate, The Willows, in Palm Springs, California. Untermyer was a noted Zionist who chaired the 1933 World Conference of Jews in Amsterdam. When he left, Einstein signed a very large, beautiful sepia photograph of himself and his wife, and presented it to a Mr. Turney who was apparently the Willows’ manager.

An 11 by 14 inch photograph, inscribed and signed by Einstein, “Mr. Turney, to whom we owe the wonderful stay in Palm Springs, January 10-13, 1932, and who showered us with kindness. Many thanks!”

This is the largest signed photograph of Einstein we have ever had, and one that is probably unique. The Willows estate still exists as a luxury hotel in Palm Springs National Park. Seven years after Einstein’s visit, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard honeymooned there as Untermyer’s guests.
