Sold – President Abraham Lincoln Appoints an Officer Commended For His Part in the Siege of Vicksburg

Ephraim M. Joel was 39 when he enlisted in the 29th Missouri Infantry at St. Louis on August 2, 1862.  He mustered in at Benton Barracks on October 18 at the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the Field and Staff as Regimental Quartermaster.  By General Order 14, dated April 21, 1863, Lt. Joel was promoted to Captain and assigned as Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers under Maj. Gen. Francis P. Blair. In Gen. Blair’s report to Gen. William T. Sherman at the end of the Vicksburg Campaign, he specifically commends Capt. Joel’s conduct in bringing up cannons captured from the Confederates for immediate use.

Document Signed as President, Washington, March 1, 1864, appointing Ephraim M. Joel “Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers, with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States; to rank as such from the twenty-first day of April, 1863…” This is the original appointment mentioned above.
