About Collecting Herbert Hoover Autographs

Herbert Hoover never liked to write out letters so ALS's from any point in his life are few and far between. Those that do exist generally are brief personal notes with little content. A noted humanitarian, his pre-presidential letters can be lengthy and relate to his work and philosophy, a nice combination.

Once in the White House, he became more circumspect and few letters have those characteristics. He was only president for seven months when the Great Depression hit, and his term and reputation were consumed by that cataclysmic event. After he lost his re-election bid in 1932 and saw how popular his successor became, his letters became bitter and negative.
