Edward Canby. Union general who led the assault on Mobile and received the surrenders of Confederate generals Taylor and Kirby Smith. A scarce Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page 4to, Washington, July 28, 1853 to Mrs. W. D. Phillips. “You are informed in reply to your letter of the 26th inst. that the family of the late Adjutant General R. Jones resides in this city. Address Mrs. Mary A. Jones, 13th Street, Washington.” After the Civil War Canby was in command in the west, where he was killed by Modoc Indians while trying to arrange a peace treaty.
