Imperial Cabinet Photograph Signed of Queen Victoria, 1893

She is pictured seated at her desk in front of an image of her beloved Prince Albert.

An oversized, framed sepia imperial cabinet photograph of the Queen seated at her writing desk, signed “Victoria RI” and dated 1893.  The photo dates from 1891.

The R in the signature stands for Regina (Queen) and the I for Imperatrix (Empress of India). In that year, the Empire grew as Egypt became a protectorate after British troops occupied land surrounding the Suez Canal to secure that vital trade route and the passage to India. Electric lights were installed on the streets of London, a height of Victorian achievement. Just the second signed portrait photograph of Victoria that we have had.

At her desk, you can see her at work, in front of an image of her beloved husband Prince Albert, who passed away much earlier, as well as other personal objects that were meaningful to her.
